What you have to do..

Produce a promotional package for a new film, to include:
1. A film trailer, which is between 2-3 minutes long
2. A film magazine front cover, featuring your own film, using InDesign
3. A poster for the film using Photoshop

All material must be put onto your own blog, to include:
1. Evidence of planning your project- schedules, storyboards, shoots, ideas, theme board...
2. Research of similiar trailers, posters and film magazines from your genre, style, chosen audience

Empire Magazine

Sin City: stunning graphics, dark narrative, amazing SFX and epic dialogue...only in a Tarrintino film. This cover has taken images from the film and imported them onto the Empire backgrond. It uses a simple range of colours, bold & breath-taking; the layout reflects the essence of the film.

Dark Knight: outstanding performances, big explosions & deep voices.

1. Describe the audience of Empire Magazine. Would you say that it appeals to a niche or mainstream audience?
2. Research who owns and runs Empire & how many magazines it sells per year.
2. How does the font and text of Joker draw upon the key themes in the film?
3. Comment on the colours that have been used in the Joker cover.
4. Why does Sin City have a movie strip at the bottom? What's the purpose of this?
5. Why do the images in both front covers overlap the magazine title?
6. Which magazine cover do you think is the most effective stylistically and why?

The Pitch

At the end of this summer term you will have to present a film pitch to the rest of the class and to a board of experts. You will present this pitch in your groups; it must be formal and 5-10 minutes long. This exercise will improve your presentational skills, help you to structure and secure your ideas, and give you some constructive feedback from those with experience in filming.

You can present your pitch however you wish, but I would recommend a combination of the following:
-A PowerPoint presentation
-A ‘mood’ board of your ideas, key themes and inspiration
-Links to YouTube and other mediums to show that you have researched the market
-A handout with all your thoughts on or key points from your presentation

In this pitch you must present:
1. Your Film Treatment- plot, style, location/ settings, characters, budget
2. Any rough or draft filming or photos that you have produced so far
3. Any inspiration you have taken from other trailers and film makers- are you imitating a particular style used in another film, a type of narrative, an effect or transition used..etc.

Tips for Top Marks!
ü Be clear, loud, think through what you are going to say
ü Make sure all materials you are going to use are ready, organized and actually work (especially if using memory sticks or sites that may be banned)
ü Comment on who your audience is and how you will target them
ü Comment on what type magazine, film distributor and exhibitor are likely to endorse your film
ü For A+ grades- how does your film fit into media concepts and theory i.e. Todorov’s narrative theorem, generic conventions, the audience as passive or active readers...etc

Industry Examples- Trailers

London to Brighton- powerful British social realist film, a must see!
  1. How does the trailer give the viewer a sense of the locations and setttings for the film?
  2. How does the trailer tell the viewer something about the narrative?
  3. How is tension built up? What devices & techniques does it use?
  4. How does the trailer engage us with the main characters? How do we get to know so much about them in such a short space of time?
  5. This film had a relatively small budget, how is this evident in the trailer? Does it matter that the budget was so small, does the trailer still have an impact?

Industry Examples- Posters

Diverse range of layout
Iconographic font- identifies genre
Characterisation
Interesting use of colour
Text and Images support eachother

Some questions to aid you in your analysis of these and other posters:
  • How does the text on R & J support the pictures and give the reader info. about the key themes of the film?
  • Why have the bullets been arranged in this way?
  • Comment on the stance, clothing, and appearance of the Trainspotting actors. What do these things tell us about their chatacters?
  • Why do the actors gaze directly into the camera? What is the effect?
  • Why do you think the creators have chosen to use black and white, with a large block of orange as their colour scheme for Trainspotting?
  • Comment on the layout of Back to the Future. Where is the eye led to first? Why is it led there? What line is the eye then encouragred to follow?
  • Why does Back to the Future have a small caption or blurb on the poster?
